Us third-worldians (india, pilipinas, kenya) had a discussion on the driving habits and non-existent road rules in our countries.
Kenny (the Kenyan): You can tell when someone is drunk driving in Kenya because he is driving straight. Because we have so many potholes if he's not turning a little, he's really drunk.
The potholes are so big sometimes they just disappear into one and come out on the other end!!!
(He was not kidding)
----------
Monica (also Indian): Nina (ex-officemate) went to India a few years ago, this year she went back with her family.
Me: Why?
Monica: (with accent) Because India is so beautiful! Its so beeeeyoootiful! (rolls her eyes) You know, I love my country but its dirty and crowded. I have to speak the truth, that is not beautiful!
----------
Kim: So what are you doing for the rest of your weekend?
Nirav: Nothing much. You?
Me: I'm buying a car tomorrow!
Kim & Nirav: Whaaaaat?
Nirav: You know its not like buying a piece of fruit, you know. You don't just squeeze it and go, oh its not okay do you have another one in the back of the shop?

I realised I haven't posted anything lately. I seem to think that I have, but only because I've been tweeting! I'm on my second week of 1030am shifts. I have two more weeks then I get normal shifts for four weeks then its welcome back, 700am. Sometimes I get tired of shifting but it could be worse, I could be on at night. I've discovered its really, really hard to go to the gym on this shift. I've been having trouble sleeping so I sleep between 1-3am. Even if I pack my gym bag with all intentions of going to the gym before work, it doesn't happen. Tomorrow I am determined to go after work, though. Let's see how late I'm awake this time.
----------
I haven't even left for New York and I've started to have to plan for South Africa. As we have 4 follow your team tickets, we have no idea where we're going and when we have to be there. FIFA doesn't announce which groups each team is in till November. So until November we don't know what date we have to be in South Africa by. I am hoping we'll start at a later date, because I think the most the other girls can stay is 3 weeks and there's a bit of a gap between some of the preliminary games and the group 16s.
I am planning to take 5-6 weeks off to do an overland safari, and they haven't released their 2010 July dates yet. I will actually have to walk into Intrepid next week and go over it with them.
Jason, being the super planner that he is, has booked flights, accomodation and 4 day Kruger safari already. Their group however is only watching the games in Cape Town, so they know when they are going and where they need to be. We're to meet them in Cape Town after the Group 16 game for about three days - a decision we had to make yesterday, with Jason giving me 24 hours notice to decide whether to join them for a while or not. Then we either go home or I start my safari. Or I could start my safari beforehand? I still have to check things out.
There's really quite a bit to do. I want to start figuring it out but I am limited by of all things, FIFA. (Seriously?!) However, I refuse to be paranoid or stressed. I'll start planning because I like doing things, but I will, as much as possible try to do things slowly as I really can't make any firm decisions till November.
-----------
One of my dreams is to go to Zanzibar. Its an island, former route for both the slave and spice trade off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa. I figured, I'm already there, I'll go! But the flights from South Africa to Tanzania may be costly, and as I want to do a safari as well, perhaps I might just do a safari in Southern Africa. And, as my officemate says, "Zanzibar is for lovers. You need a man!" Thanks, dude.
I swore though, that next year I would go to one of the things on my top 10 places to go list - I took South Africa off when we got the World Cup tickets - and Tanzania is on that list. Also Libya & Tunisia which I could do instead (same continent, will that work :P). In fairness so is New Zealand, so realistically I could just buy a cheap flight and do it, hahaha. We shall see.
-----------
Sleep, please do not evade me unless I'm at work :) Good night.

Today I am the only girl at work in a team of Indians.
By the end of today I should be speaking some sort of Hindi.
100% of it will probably be rude.
---------
My friend is in love with this girl who was an extra in a Bollywood movie. She was in some disco scene flirting with the lead actor. Anyway, he was looking for a copy of the movie so I asked my 70% Indian team. The movie is called Victory. It is a famous movie simply because It Was So Bad. It was so bad, that they kept trying to convince me not to get another movie when I asked them to get it for me. Its so bad that my officemate is pissed that he paid "real money" to watch it in the theatre. (Instead of buying it for a dollar, pirated)
To top it off, my friend would like the movie non-pirated (we are all finding this part weird) because he is going to show it in a movie theatre for all her friends for her birthday.
Now, I don't know about you but I'd be incredibly embarrassed by this but maybe this girl will like it very much. I don't know. I think its not the greatest of ideas because not only is it embarrassing but to quote
skycandylove "Its considered to be a bad movie by the Indian populace!"
Despite this being a blink or miss it part, I think, this plan is going ahead. My officemate has found the dvd - while it did not take much effort, he had to go back to the store (next to his house) 6 times because the store owner kept telling him it was there when it wasn't - and it goes to my friend on Monday.

cool_bananas and I will be watching the premiere of Inglorious Basterds with Quentin Tarantino himself in attendance. (Ticketmaster is selling tickets for the state theatre for $40). We are hoping against hope, that Brad Pitt, despite supposedly saying he doesn't believe in God, is attending. (I have to say its meant to come from the German magazine "Bild" which is notorious for having goss on football players as well, so I'm not so sure its entirely trustworthy. Plus stuff can be lost in translation...)
Brad, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese come to Sydney. You can take your kids. Or not.
---------
It hasn't been a busy day today but suddenly I now have to deal with a failed DSL installation so I had better go now.

Kenny (the Kenyan): Michael Jackson is not dead!
Kim: Of course not. I saw him at the disco last week. He was there. He was dancing. There was blood on the dance floor.
Kenny: No, I refuse to believe that he's dead. I'm sure he's just somewhere! Ask Victor
Victor (with a thick african accent): Yes! Like Tupac Shakur! Tupac Shakur is just somewhere out there
Kenny: With Michael Jackson.

Sacha, one of my closest friends here is moving to Juelich in Germany where she got a research job for her post doctorate. Her farewell party was German themed: Come as something German.
I decided to come as the song 99 Luftballoons (which you may or may not remember from the 80s) sang by Nena.
I had a shirt that said 99 but it kind of was tiny. And these are my balloons and I borrowed a blonde wig.
Here I am with Sacha, as the star of the party she came in a traditional German costume:

Not a lot of people dressed up - there was a girl in a red sweatshirt with a balloon that looked like me but I think i was better cos I had a blonde wig - but those of us that did, went all out.

Anne Frank (born in Germany) and Marlene Dietrich

with Heidi Klum, another German beer girl (costume modifications to outfit handmade!) and two tourists
Had a great time with everyone but will miss Sacha dearly. It won't be the same with out her!

I keep thinking that I've posted but when really I've just tweeted. Haven't had much to talk about these past few weeks. Life is going slowly but steadily, I'm learning to be more patient and am figuring more about my life and what I want to do slowly.
I've realised that I really need a vacation. If I don't go run away for a while and recharge and travel I get really cranky. I should have really gone to Byron Bay but that was not possible at the time. I'm going to have to figure out something soon - before September, by then I might have morphed into cranky uber bitch.

coolbananas and I are meant to start a food blog.
Strangely enough, three years later my Vox account still exists! OMG. I am going to change the password and turn it over to Miel to figure out during boring office time, hahaha. We now need a better camera, tho Pia has volunteered to take pics.
Not that we cook anymore. We're perfectly capable of cooking, we just would rather eat out hahahaa.
Check out the food blog here will post more details when we get them.

“Every tennis lover would like, someday, to play like Federer,” Philippe Bouin told me. “But every man wants to be Rafael Nadal. Which is different.”
Read a great article on Rafa, over here
sushi_star needs to see this site where they have pictures of his arms which will lead to more of our discussions on him.
Wimbeldon is coming soon!

I miss reading about the football but the transfer rumors are driving me nuts.
____________
I have new music:
Paolo Nutini, Tori Amos, Dave Matthews, Mandy Moore, Alejandro Sanz, Alex Cuba (late, I know that one)
The Mandy Moore one sounds very adult contemporary, but I like it, its calm and relaxing. Alex Cuba is comforting as always. Tori is a bit less angsty then I remember. Dave sounds the same, again as always. Alejandro Sanz, I got his entire discography but have not listened to the whole thing yet. Paolo Nutini's is the only one I don't like in its entirety. I like a few songs, less than a handful even, the rest sounds very much like he's trying to go a bit jazzy big band. It works but its not what I was expecting. Ironically this is one of the albums (aside fr Alex Cuba, that you can't really download, its too hard to find) I actually paid for! Everything else was a download. I thought I'd be supportive of Paolo. Sigh, oh well.

Went to see "Breathless" at the Sydney Film Fest last Thursday. It was very violent but also bloody and funny at the same time. It was a Korean movie about a small time gangster with anger issues and the relationships he has in his life. I thought it was good, but could have ended earlier. The boys fell in love with the movie (except Jason, who agrees with me) and were repeating Korean curse words - the movie was full of them - the whole way home.
Jason took me home in his dad's two seater car. His dad is on holiday for a few months so Jason is minding the car. Its a 2 seater, convertible, 1978, i forgot the model and the make, white car that makes more noises than Pia's car, hahaha. I wanted to put the top down but it was cold and it was such a pain in the ass apparently to do that because its manually done with clips and everything. It was such a small car tho I do not know how he fit Bec and her two 23 kilo suitcases in when he picked her up in the airport the next day.
It was soooo foggy on the way home. I don't think I've ever seen it that foggy for that long. We kept going wow this feels like Europe. I liked the fog.

Yesterday I had dinner with Rose at the Spanish tapas restaurant in Glebe. The head waiter type dude, who seats people, was this old Spanish guy. Rose was late, so he seated me first and when she came in, he almost wouldn't seat her. Then he said, "Oh you're with the chinese girl that's waiting by herself" with matching gestures to the eyes with his hands. Rose was completely abashed, "Excuse Me?" she said. And he apologized and showed her to our table which was in the back. She promptly told me and I was like, "Excuse me does he want me to tell him I'm not chinese in spanish, fucker?" and this other random waiter heard and got scared I think cos he was so nice to us the whole evening.
I get that for some Euros there is no difference, everyone from Asia is Chinese - this is normal especially for really old Europeans (like my friend's french grandma in law who still thinks she's chinese four years later) - but honestly, you live in Australia and have probably done so for a number of years. Your restaurant is next to a vietnamese one and a thai one. Must you generalise?
I'm not offended that you think I'm chinese. Technically I'm sure there's chinese in there somewhere. I was kind of pissed off last night that you generalised, in a country like this. If we were in Spain or some random non-multicultural country, but here? Seriously. Not all Asians are chinese! I don't expect you to know I'm filo, but really man. No wonder these Spanish people keep getting into trouble for racist remarks at sporting events. Better info, please.

Today I'm off to see this Kazakhstani movie with Zuelen. But before that I have lunch with the ARRC and a naturopath appointment. Am a bit sad I didn't get to go to Byron with everyone, but at least I am working on Monday and will get time and a half plus plus. (YAY)
I feel tired like I didn't sleep well, tho I'm fairly sure I got at least 8 hours. I dreamt I had a cute white puppy named Christina and when I woke up the puppy was gone :( Sad.
Otherwise I'm listening to the new Dave Matthews album. I should really get that hard drive so I can finally reload my ipod. I also bought the new Nutini album cos I couldn't find a place to download it (clearly he's popular, but not THAT popular...)
Off I go now.

I've been rather slack in posting this week. Largely because 7am starts don't make for much brain power at the end of the day. I have to get up around 5:20 and make my way to the bus stop for the 5:48am bus on weekdays. Next week I start at the slightly later time of 730am. So while y'all are still sleeping or getting up or jogging remember that I am on my way to work.
And that tomorrow I might have to take the bloody night bus to get to work on time. (WTF)
Other than that things have been fine. Work is ok.
I've been really trying to sleep early but lately that's been one epic fail. The earliest I've made it so far is between ten and ten thirty. This morning while walking to the Marion/Norton corner stop (better lighting at 530 am than the elswick st stop) I realised that first of all there are no joggers at 530 on Saturday and second, it might be time to get a car. I work Sunday mornings too, the earliest bus is at 5:58am, I think (I'm not taking the one at 5:04) so I could be late for work. Also its hard to get up and make it on Saturdays.
Continued from Saturday
So we lost 3-0 to Valencia. I'm not sure I want to watch the game, hahaah. Iker will probably be "emotionally distressed" again, as Kickette refers to it. Poor bb. So Barcelona wins the liga this year, as expected. Seriously, I'm a madridista, but I am realistic and you kind of could tell from the way it was doing earlier in the year how it was going to go. I had hoped they would do better in the second el clasico, but as a lot of the RM fans said, it wasn't that we lost, its more that we performed embarrassingly. For the record, Barca has done really well this season and I think they truly deserve to win the title. And yes, I am supporting them in the champions league even if it is weird bec I effing dislike Man U (I'm sorry Man U friends, i do) and I think for once it should be a non-english team!
Thanks to my office mate, I got a ride to work today and got to wake up at 540 instead of being on the bus by then (YAY). I have decided that I should really get a car, because it takes 15 minutes to drive to North Sydney on a weekend and we get free parking and seriously this 5am shit is difficult. So if anyone knows anyone who is selling a cheap second hand still good car, lemme know.
Rudo y Cursi
Last night we saw Rudo y Cursi at the Spanish film fest. This movie has Gael Garcia Bernal & Diego Luna as two brothers who are total hicks that are kindov stupid and really funny. They are discovered playing football and are taken to the big city to make a name for themselves. The ending is bittersweet but the whole thing is utterly hilarious. Gael also thinks he could be a singer, and OMG he makes a video that is so cheesy, and so bad its crazy funny. Would highly recommend it to everyone.
Sue Ellen and I are now super excited to see other Spanish Films at the filmfest. Miel & I are watching "just walking" on Saturday evening (Trish do you want to come). It also looks like I might do a double movie and see Chef's special with Len right after that (eeeee! exciting!).

Computator!
Last Sunday I gave up & bought my Mac. I still love my PC and will keep dear old Damian till he decides to full on die and never turn on again, but he's got a few quirks like a wireless that will not turn on, some sound issues, and he hangs a lot. Also I think he's getting a bit tired. So I got him a younger sibling. And yes, I named my Mac "iker". I was kind of worried that I would open the box and get a girl computer - I know this is weird but I have had several computers over the years and it has not gone well for me when they are girls and yes my computers have genders - and I had no girl names. I was like, what will I name you? Fortunately, its a boy!
And yes, I am a geek & my computers are my babies.
I ended up paying half up front (thanks mum!) and putting the other half on my credit card. I was going to get financing but it was 24% interest (wtf!) so I just stuck it on the card as the interest was lower. My mum was very excited bec we will finally get to just use Skype, as the mic and camera are working but we are throttled, hahaha, so I said, uhm sorry mum we'll have to wait till Monday Apr 27, tho its looking a bit faster today.
I am still learning to use my MAC and would like to thank Sue Ellen & Gutsy for their extreme patience while I say things like, "But where'd it go?" "Haaaaaaa?". I promise to read MAC 101 soon, Len.
Work & Stolen ATMs
I started the week on a 7am shift. It was a bit strange getting on the bus at 540am each day. I missed it twice, and learnt that even if you get on the 6:07 bus you still make it to work. Its just that I don't get the extra time to walk leisurely and buy stuff. I also decided that I should buy fruit on the way to work everyday, instead of buying in advance so that I get fresh fruit and don't have all this random stuff sitting in my fridge kind of dying. I would also like to thank my team mate Kim, who got me coffee every morning because I got to work too early for coffee everyday. I do not know what is going to happen when we both do 7am at the end of May.
(PS: Ala, I get weekdays off from next week onwards, so if you're at uni & want to meet for coffee at some point on one of my days off, would love to catch up in Newtown, let me know!)
On Thursday, as I was walking to work a whole portion of the street got cordoned off and was full of police cars. A lady that was walking with me, stopped a cop and said, "Excuse me, that's my building. How do I get in? Should I just go home?" And the cop couldn't tell us what was going on. Later on we learnt that some guys had blown up one of the facade of the building - on the mezzanine level - where there were two ATMs, and somehow physically taken both ATMs out, and gone off with them.
The windows of the building up to 8 floors up got cracked or blown up. Dick Smith, the store underneath the ATMs had to close too, and I guess everyone else had to go do their business continuity plans and work elsewhere.
There have been a lot of attempts at random ATMs across NSW and beyond. Most of these attempts are not successful, but it creates a lot of hassle cos people blow up ATMs thinking/Ram into store fronts with cars, etc. thinking they'll get into safes but most of the time they just create a lot of damage and don't end up with any money.
Also, there have been quite a few skimming devices put on machines lately, so everyone please be careful, cover your hand when you put in your pin and check the place where you stick your card in to see if anything is suspicious. (Usually they put another card reader on top of the existing one and it juts out)
Surprises
On Tuesday I got my Kevin money! Thank you government stimulus. It promptly went to pay my credit card because of course I already spent it.
Wednesday Miel & I went to eat at Bills with Jason. We had a great dinner, I had a wagyu burger and she had pork belly. Jason had vego risotto, and we really enjoyed these risotto balls that were quite filling. They also had surprisingly good chorizo, better than half the Spanish restaurants I've been in, seeing as they tend to think grilled chorizo = burnt chorizo.
When I got home, I got a letter from the tax office saying, Kevin has paid you. (Yes, I know, thanks) And another letter that said, "We are delighted to inform you that we have accepted your application for citizenship!" YAAAAY Go Me!
I am finally, finally (almost) Aussie!
Now all I have to do is wait for the ceremony, which could take up to 6 months, and then I will be a citizen and can get my blue passport. I hope it doesn't take too long.
I also have to go to centrelink and advise them, so we can get our assurance of support back.
Then on Thursday, Jason called me to say, "My application has question marks next to the matches I have chosen. And my credit card has been charged"
So I went to FIFA saw my question mark, checked my card and even if I haven't received my confirmation email (Jason has!) I know thanks to the entry that says FIFA Johannesburg, I got my World Cup tickets .
SOUTH AFRICA HERE WE COME!
I am off to africa with Pia, Jao, Jason, Bec, Jojo, Rihan & possibly Madeline (who I don't understand how she could be Swedish and have to ask Jojo "What sport is this world cup for?" Look I know there are other sports that have world cups, but seriously?)
I got the news at work but I could not freak out because I was working. I told one team mate and I was going, there's a question mark do you know what this means? And despite being a massive football fan he'd never bought tickets so he couldn't explain it either. Fortunately my credit card has answered my question.
Jason is going to five games in CapeTown and I am going to do Follow Your Team/4 Games with Team Espana!!!
YAAAAAY!
So far we have absolutely no freaking clue where we are going to end up because its follow your team and we could go anywhere, plus they don't have a group yet, so we have no dates. I am presuming that because Spain won the Euros they automatically qualify (not that they haven't yet anyway) so there is no danger of ending up watching another team bec they don't qualify. [Does anyone have any idea when the groups are going to be released?

I am planning to get a round the world ticket and taking my full five weeks (hell, six if my boss lets me) spending three ish weeks in Africa then heading over to Spain and some part of Europe. Jao & I plan to go to San Sebastian, and before that I will meet Sacha somewhere, because she is moving back to Europe this July.
And then somehow I'll go back to work! bwahahaha.
And that's all the exciting news for this week. Back to our regularly scheduled program :)

Nirav (Arsenal) & Ryo (Liverpool) talking about the match at work
Ryo: something something Yossi
Me: Are you a scouser?
Ryo: Scouser? (laughs) Yeah, I am. Are you a football fan
Me: Yes!
Ryo: So what's her team?
Nirav: Madrid
Ryo: Really? She likes football?
Nirav: Yeah, she's pretty good actually.
I'm sooooo proud :) I am not just football frufru anymore hahaha

Usually, seriously I have patience with customer service. Having worked in CS for a bazillion years, really i try to be nice. But today, OMG I went to mc donald's to get brekkie, and they were so slow. This maccas is never usually slow (well at least in feb, the last time i got brekkie, it wasn't). And they kept a whole heap of us waiting before even getting our orders. Then, to top it off, I asked for a sausage & egg mc muffin, and when i got to work (having not opened the bag) i found out it was a bacon & egg muffin! That's not what i wanted, mate. I wanted the sausage. Sausage. This is my favorite thing in maccas ever. At least they got my Fruit Bag right.
I am now at work, on hold waiting for the people in the technician's call centre in India to get back to me with an updated ETA for a part we are waiting on in Kalgoorlie, WA. Never mind that everyone in WA hasn't woken up yet because we're 2 hours ahead and they have the same time as Pilipinas.
Last night I could not sleep I was coughing so bad I had to drink Benadryl. I felt so dry, I kept getting up to pee as well. I have since learnt that doing an extra hour at work (to make up for coming in late at having to go to the doctor's) plus going out with friends even if I barely spoke is not a good combination.
So no more late nights, not that I was late I was just super tired and tireder if that's even possible. Have also coughed at technician! Hahaha.
Next week my shift is at 730am. The whole month of May I have weird offs and after next weekend, I don't have a weekend off - at least a full one - for three weeks. Most of my offs are during the week,I think I get a Sunday off in the middle of May. (Gosh, when will I go to church if my shift ends at 730? I suppose I could get up and go to the 8am? Hmmm must check shifts)
Have also noticed that it must be difficult to get here for everyone on weekends. Usually we are all at least 10-20 min early, but every one that's come in after me, came in 2-5 min before, max and I made it just on the dot (am usually 15-20 min early to load system)
I'm so sleepy. I'm going to get back to dealing with technicians now.

El cd dice que "volume 2 will have you talking about yourself, past, present and future, chatting and even flirting". Piense que tendria verbos en tensos diferentes y otras palabras pero no!
por ejemplo:
de donde eres?
voy al hotel
saliste?
he reservado una habitacion
------------
okay, someone teach me how to do the accents over letters cos i've forgotten how to do them again. muchas gracias

Blame it on boredom, or being in quarantine for a week but finally getting to the city this Sunday resulted in some random picture taking in the photo booths at Capitol Square. The amusing, chinese photo booths with backgrounds.

This is the cover of our Korean telenovela DVD entitled Wish: My Sassy Gutsy Shining Star.
I get to play Gutsy's loyal BFF.

The reason for the shining star can be seen in this photo. Note the kumikinang sparkling teeth (I swear, we did not plan this, the picture just came out with a sparkle)
We have more pictures, but these are the most amusing. Apologies for the poor quality but we do not have a scanner at hand so I had to take pictures of the pictures and do a bit of contrast with GIMP. The pictures look crap when enlarged but they do all right in small version.
Had a fun day today. I had a cafe mocha at lindt (and some ice cream but i only ate half because it was too sweet - this has never happened before) and then we walked around, found all the bookstores were closed, bought $15 shoes, hit the IGA in chinatown to get datu puti & hello panda and headed home. The pictures were the best part of the afternoon.
Happy Easter, everyone!

Gutsy: Tell me na lang if he tweets a lot.
